These stories contain the seeds of hope. They are stories of renewal and resurrection; they are evidence of the spirit of God’s love in the hearts of people. As you read look for themes of hope and justice, of a commitment to a God-given role of steward of God’s creation, of charity, of justice for all. These stories are a way to observe what is happening on the earth. A few are local from Diocese of Ontario. And many others are collections available regularly on the internet.

1: The Anglican Communion Forest Project continues into 2025, as seen in a recent report from St. Lawrence Church, Brockville. Significant effort made by the folks there!

Another local story is of Kingston’s Crossroads United Church; “Our Livable Solutions”  project provides shelters.

Canada’s Supreme Court has ruled in favour of seven young people who sued the Ontario Government for not providing climate care in a case begun in 2019.

2: The pace of innovation is helping efforts to decarbonize industry, and the auto sector in particular. The rapid-fire announcements of breakthroughs in battery technology has given us reason to think the EV revolution will continue regardless of momentary hiccups. A good source for information and good news stories about electric vehicles is the Electric Viking at https://www.youtube.com/@electricviking.

China’s CATL, the largest and most innovative battery manufacturer in the world, announced last week that they have developed a breakthrough in sodium ion battery technology which solves most of the remaining problems with the dominant lithium ion batteries. The new sodium ion technology works better when the temperature is -40 than when it is hot outside, recharging to 80% in six minutes, even when it is minus 40 degrees outside! This is great news for Canada in particular, as one commonly heard complaint about EVs is that “they don’t work in Saskatchewan winters.” Innovation will make this whine obsolete by the end of this year.

Furthermore, the sodium ion technology uses sodium; a more common element in the earth’s crust; easier and cheaper to extract, thus making cars that employ it more affordable. Sodium ion technology is less volatile than lithium ion, so these batteries will be far less likely to ever catch fire than lithium. CATL plans to move into mass production of this new battery, putting them in many models of their cars in December of this year. Meanwhile India has moved ahead with their own sodium ion batteries, promising many advantages, and being able to charge to 80% in six minutes. The field is really moving fast now. The fact that many battery companies around the world are rapidly developing this technology means that competition is more likely to result in lower prices for consumers, if tariffs don’t defeat the efforts towards affordability.
